Com o recrutamento em massa de homens para a Primeira Guerra Mundial (1914-1918), as mulheres começaram a ganhar espaço na esfera pública em funções que iam além do serviço doméstico e de creche. Elas assumiram funções importantes em diversos segmentos, entre eles fundição de tijolos, geração de energia, construção de navios, sinalização de trens, fundição de ferro, escavação e até construção de casa.

O Imperial War Museum, em Londres, ao lado de outras entidades (como a Wikimedia), tem documentado em seu acervo uma grande coleção de fotografias que mostra como o trabalho transformou a vida das mulheres durante o período da Primeira Guerra Mundial.
